The SeCoNd picture is an up close of the print toning that Kentie and I worked a VERY long time on. I first soaked the print in a pan of water to saturate it, drained and let dry for about 5 min. then began to paint it with various food products. We had to make a recipe for our process as part of the project, here is mine...
Supply List Needed
-35mm negative
-half inch paint brush
-large flat pan
-old grape flavored Gatorade powder mix
-plenty of water
-000 sized paint brush
-four drops of French’s original mustard
-pure vanilla extract
-almost empty magenta ink cartridge
-packet of cherry flavored Fla-Vor-Aid
-1 1/2 inch paint brush
-cup & coffee mug to mix in
Recipe for Printing Process
- Take a 35mm negative and place it in a 35mm negative carrier
- Do not remove condenser lens from 120 position
- Take note of where your subject is in the frame of the paper
- Expose print paper to (f11 @ 30sec. PC3)
- Take paper to developer, DO NOT DROP IN
- Using a half inch paint brush in a vertical direction, paint developer onto the area containing the subject
- Once the subject begins to appear paint a small area surrounding it with developer
- Then take your paint brush and begin a cross weave pattern around the remaining undeveloped area
- Once you have achieved the desired cross weave effect, place in stop bath and continue development process as normal
Recipe for Toning Process
- Place print in a flat pan and submerge in water
- Let soak about 5 minutes
- Drain water off and leave to sit an additional 5 minutes
- Add 5 scoops of old grape Gatorade to 1/4 a cup of water
- Using the same half inch paint brush begin to dip and spread the grape Gatorade along the bottom half of the print in the water area careful not to paint on the subject itself (to achieve darker areas use more Gatorade in specific areas)
- Bring grape Gatorade to edge of water line and clean brush
- Using a 000 brush, first dip in French’s mustard then pure vanilla extract
- Spread mustard vanilla mix across half the print right at the water/horizon edge
- Pick up your half inch brush again and tap bristles in the top of the old magenta ink cartridge
- Begin to stroke the magenta through the faint developer lines directly above the mustard vanilla line
- Once your strokes of magenta are complete, wash brush
- Using same brush wipe over magenta area with the mustard vanilla mix to create an orange tone
- Continue using the mustard vanilla mix across the remaining sky area of the print
- When the sky area is completely covered, mix a small amount of cherry flavored Fla-Vor-Aid to half a coffee mug of water
- Mix thoroughly
- Then using a one and a half inch paint brush, combine the cherry flavored Fla-Vor-Aid with a very small amount of vanilla, and brush straight across the sky area
- Wash out all brushes, let dry, and your done!
